Nehemiah 2 v 1-8 Nehemiah before king
(Click the link to get to the passage)
So often people worry about how on
earth they will be able to do or achieve the things that God has for them to
do. At the beginning the questions pile in - money, time, resources, strength.
Nehemiah accepts the call of God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and then
prepares to meet the King. The phrase, "I was very much afraid" at
the end of v2 screams of the risk he was taking, combined with "Then I prayed to the
God of heaven, and I answered the king".
Then slowly but surely the plan falls into place. Step by step the resources,
people power and permission arrive, meaning Nehemiah can oversee the rebuilding
of the walls.
Do we really trust that God has the
big picture in his hands? Take time today to reflect on the past, and identify
times that we have been walking in line with Jesus, and recognise that he has
been putting the pieces in place. Rejoice that we serve an active and loving
God who really does work for the good of those who love him. Allow the testimony of how God has
worked in the past to encourage you today as you look forward to all that God
has promised to do in your life and the tasks he has given you to do.
Merciful Lord,
absolve your people from their offences,
that through your bountiful goodness
we may all be delivered from the chains of those sins
which by our frailty we have committed;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for Jesus Christ's sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour.
